The MAKONDE from Tanzania (Central-East Africa), a Bantu-people, are best known for their marveillous wooden sculptures. The bodymask in our Makonde room is a traditional "Njorowé" mask and presents the corps of a pregnant woman.  In the Makonde tribue, the woman has a very important role as well in the community as in mythology, in religion matters as in art. As in the cosmogony of the Makonde, the first man on earth was a sculptor. He cut a female figure out of a big wooden bloc and fell asleep. When he woke up, his wooden sculpture had changed into a woman in flesh en blood. She gave birth to many children and after she died she was honoured as a symbol of fertility of the Makonde. This "Njorowé" bodymask is part of the traditional dance costume which was worn at the initiation rituals when boys and girls became adults.
