Molière, who's real name was Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, lived from 1622 untill 1673, and is considered as the greatest playwriter of the 17th century. He raised in 1643 his own theatre group, the "Illustre Théâtre". He performed in 1658 in Parijs with great succes for Lodewijk XIV, of who he was since in big favour and who became is protector. He wrote numerous plays and ballets for the french royalties, often with music from Lully, f.e. 'Le bourgeois gentilhomme' (1670) and 'Le malade imaginaire' (1673). Inspired by the 'commedia dell'arte' and the Roman comedy he lauched in his plays with the behaviour and life of certain common groupes. By this he raised comedy on the same level as the tragedies from Racine and Corneille. Some of his plays: 'Les précieuses ridicules' (1659), 'l'Ecole des femmes' (1662), 'Tartuffe', (1664), 'Le misanthrope' (1666), 'l'Avare' (De vrek,1668), 'Les Fourberies de Scapin' (1671), 'Les femmes savantes' (1672).
